Many events and activities take place in the context of the project "Strangers become Friends". They are organized by the people responsible for the project or come from the initiative of the host families and students.

Our main activities include the Welcome Evening at the beginning of each semester and an excursion for students and their hosts. Students often get together with their local partners on an individual basis to hike, watch the traditional duck race, to go to the "International Stammtisch", or to attend cultural events. For the most part, the German partners and foreign students decide on an individual basis what they would like to do together.

We invite you to navigate through various activities of our project on the left side menu. There, you can view pictures of students with their hosts on excursions and taking part in other activities.

Please note, however, that all the activities pages are currently only available in German.

"International Stammtisch"

"International Stammtisch" - Every 3rd Thursday
at 8 pm in Café NERLY, Marktstr. 6
Since 1998 there has been an "International Stammtisch" in Erfurt, a meeting place for people of all ages and nationalities who come to broaden their horizons and expose themselves to new cultures. Some people come because they are interested in getting a first-hand account of countries they are interested in, while others want the chance to improve their languages such as English, Russian, Spanish, French or German, learn about studies, school years, or internship abroad, or simply have a glass of beer, juice or wine in good company. Sometimes international guests from over 30 different countries come to the "International Stammtisch": for example, an Iraqi refugee might be sitting next to an American student who received a scholarship from the German-American Society to study at the University of Erfurt for a year. One can meet students of the University of Applied Sciences from Indonesia, Lithuania, Russia and many other countries, as well as young people from England or Greece who are doing an internship at the World Business Center or perhaps even an employee of a language school, a computer company or 'Döner' shop' in Erfurt. One can find someone to talk to about many different organisations and programs  and learn about working as an 'Au Pair' in France, intensive language courses in Spain or work and travel in Australia, for example. One can also find someone to talk about a recent vacation or about cultural and political differences.
At the "International Stammtisch" many of the international students have found their hosts here in Erfurt, through the program "Fremde werden Freunde" (Strangers become Friends. They use the "Stammtisch" for their regular meetings.
